Gave myself another hour of King's Quest today (per Jaym's orders).
Guys...you don't understand. Yes, it is beautifully rendered. Yes, the music is great. Yes, it has some amazing actors voicing the characters. But you don't understand the deep beauty of it or just *how* amazingly clever the new series is unless you've played the old.
The trick here is that you are following the life of King Graham, from before he even became a proper knight all the way through whatever lies ahead. (I haven't finished the games yet, so please, please honor my request here and do not spoil me on this. For many reasons, this story means more to me than most of you will ever understand. Let me have this.) You're not just replaying the old games you used to play (only prettier); not by a long-shot. In fact, thus far, it seems that the original series is what is happening BETWEEN the chapters you are playing right now. SO clever.
The new series is peppered with a lot of baaaaad puns, in honor of the original, sure. But...there's SO much more, you guys. There are in-jokes that you will *only* get if you've played the original series. Little chirps of music that you will recognize. Little quips of dialogue.
Without giving anything away? At the end of the second chapter, they drop a big hint that had me FREAKING OUT with the implications of a certain character.
This is even more of a big deal when you realize that I just don't freak out about stories -- even the ones I love. I've always been more of a "silent appreciation" kind of consumer.
Not with this. From the very first hour of the very first chapter, when I encountered and had to deal with [spoiler], I was gasping and chirping and cheering like I have never done before.
I actually screamed at the revelation of [spoiler] at the end of the second chapter. Because I usually catch these things early and yet I was reeling from "HOW DID I NOT PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER???"
I'm early in on Chapter Three now. LOVING the "real" story of how the King met his Queen. :) I'm delighted by the musical theme of "Girl in the Tower" (from KQ6 -- "Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow") making its way through this chapter's soundtrack.
I'm heartbroken for [spoiler] and I'm torn at a decision I'm already dreading making but haven't made yet, even though I *already know* that everything is going to be okay in the end -- the King will marry his Queen, etc. I'm gasping and squeaking because of all these little hints and characters I grew up with are being woven into a brand new story, with all new implications and weight to the events of the original series. And you would never catch ANY of this if you hadn't played the originals.
This game is made for me, and all gamers like me.
It's just...oh my god, guys.
